Physical Education Subject Intent
PE is integral to the school curriculum, not just to promote a healthy lifestyle, but to engage and inspire children with physical approaches to learning and develop children into well-rounded and healthy individuals. We aim to promote children’s physical, mental, social and health development. Children at Overthorpe are encouraged to reach their full potential in an inclusive, challenging and engaging environment. Many of our school values are also demonstrated in the teaching of PE, through encouraging resilience, teamwork, fairness and respect.
Schools have a responsibility to inspire lifelong participation in an active lifestyle through positive physical literacy. To achieve this Overthorpe delivers a wide range of sports and activities to keep children engaged. Competition and the valuable life skills taking part in these bring such as communication, expressing themselves and team work puts importance in allowing children the opportunity to compete against peers and other schools. This in turn builds self-esteem and contributes to the desire to continue.
We plan our PE curriculum around the needs and interests of our children and also to reflect the area in which we work therefore we have a focus sport of tag rugby which is a huge part of our local community. We strive to provide all children with access to a wide range of extracurricular sporting activities. Pupils can participate in these at after school clubs throughout the year. These additional activities allow us to offer a range of games, sports and fitness activities over and above our curriculum offer.
