Music Subject Intent

At Overthorpe C of E Academy, we are guided by both the National Curriculum for Music (2014.) and the Model Music Curriculum (2021).

At Overthorpe C of E Academy, Music is taught incorporating listening, composing, and performing, giving the children the skills to be well rounded musicians. We develop an understanding of the interrelated dimensions of music which gives a foundation in the blocks of music theory.

Our Music Curriculum has the power to build character, confidence, and creativity. Furthermore, it is an area that all children can succeed in and is a very physical, hands-on approach to learning that cannot always be attained in other subjects. It offers the opportunity of expression and ignites passion.

Music is important as it takes aspects from other subject areas such as humanities and art subjects. Children will learn the history of specific types of music and where they originated from. Our curriculum encompasses the opportunity to be historians and geographers not just musicians.

Music is a way in which everyone from all backgrounds, races, cultures and communities can come together and appreciate life. By exposing our children and fulfilling the National Curriculum as well as the Model Music Curriculum we are on a mission to ensure that it is one that is erupting with knowledge.

Through the delivery of our Music curriculum, our aim is to build an enriched Music capital for all of our children, regardless of their background and starting point, so that they are inspired to continue to use Music in their everyday life, future education and careers.
