Maths Curriculum Intent

At Overthorpe C of E Academy we recognise the importance of maths. We want every child to enjoy maths and the challenge it brings. We feel it develops children’s character and resilience when they take small connected steps. It is critical to science, technology, engineering, financial literacy and all forms of employment. Therefore, we recognise the importance of the quality of our mathematics curriculum because it can have a profound impact on the future of our pupils. We follow a maths mastery approach in order to allow every child to succeed.

Through all of the aspects at Overthorpe for maths, we ensure that all children have the chance to connect ideas and build on existing knowledge from year group to year group. Our Maths curriculum is based on the White Rose Maths Hub curriculum.

We aim to use small steps and concrete, pictorial and abstract to develop depth of understanding and progress throughout year groups.

Principles for maths at Overthorpe:

  • To create enjoyment
  • Foster resilience
  • Develop a passion
  • Build independence

The aims of our maths mastery approach at Overthorpe:

  1. Most importantly, children are: enthusiastic about maths; to be completely engaged throughout all maths lessons and to promote children’s curiosity to allow them to take risks without feeling a fear of failure.
  2. For children to be fluent in all aspects of the basic foundations of maths and have a quick and efficient recall of these facts in order to deepen their understanding in other areas.
  3. For children to be able to problem solve by practicing a variety of questions and problems in routine and non-routine ways, that also increase in complexity.
  4. We aim to promote children’s ability to reason through opportunities to discuss their thinking and understanding. This emphasis may result in less written work but much deeper understanding.
  5. For all children to progress at their own pace, but to not be left behind. At Overthorpe, we promote the use of small groups that all children to keep up and not have to catch up, so same day interventions with co-ordinated by all staff is essential.
