History Subject Intent
At Overthorpe, we aim to ensure that all pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. Our history curriculum is designed to support children to understand the story of humans, to challenge them to make sense of the similarities and vast differences in human experience across time and place and to enable children to gain a sense of their own identity and place within the world.
We encourage our pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement in order to build their curiosity about historical events, places and key people. We intend to equip children with the historical skills to be able to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.
Finally, we hope to foster an appreciation and understanding of the perseverance, courage and sacrifices made by remarkable people from the past whose legacies have paved the way for our lives today. It is through such inspirational figures that we hope to inspire and empower our children to know and believe the difference they could make to their own lives and to the lives of future generations.
