Computing Subject Intent
In designing our school computing curriculum, our primary goal is to empower students with essential skills and knowledge that will prepare them for the digital age. We have identified three key threads that weave through our curriculum, ensuring a well-rounded and future-ready educational experience: computer science, information technology, and online safety.
Computer Science (Programming):
At the heart of our computing curriculum is computer science, with a primary focus on introducing students to the foundations of programming. Starting from year one, students will engage in age-appropriate coding activities that foster logical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity. As they progress through the curriculum, they will explore various programming languages, developing a solid understanding of computational concepts.
Our approach to computer science is hands-on and project-based, allowing students to apply their coding skills in real-world contexts. From creating interactive stories to designing simple games, students will build a strong foundation in programming that prepares them for the increasingly digital landscape of the future.
Information Technology:
Complementing our emphasis on computer science, the information technology thread of our curriculum equips students with essential digital literacy skills. Students will learn to navigate digital tools and platforms effectively, ensuring they can harness the power of technology for learning and communication.
Through engaging lessons, students will explore applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and multimedia tools, developing proficiency in a range of software. This knowledge not only supports their academic growth but also lays the groundwork for effective communication and collaboration in a technology-driven world.
Online Safety:
Embedded in every aspect of our computing curriculum is a strong commitment to online safety. Recognising the importance of preparing students to navigate the digital world responsibly, we integrate lessons on internet safety, digital citizenship, and ethical use of technology into every session.
From understanding the basics of online etiquette to recognising potential risks and dangers, students will develop the critical skills needed to be responsible digital citizens. Our curriculum emphasises the importance of protecting personal information, respecting others’ online privacy, and making informed decisions when using digital platforms.
While each thread—computer science, information technology, and online safety—has its dedicated focus, they are intricately interwoven throughout the curriculum. For instance, coding projects may incorporate elements of digital communication, emphasising both programming skills and responsible online behaviour.
Our curriculum not only equips students with technical skills but also fosters a holistic understanding of the digital world. By emphasising computational thinking, digital literacy, and online safety in tandem, we aim to empower students to navigate the complexities of the digital age with confidence and responsibility.
Computing and Online Safety
We teach online safety through our Computing curriculum with use of Project Evolve resources. A map of how these are taught to the children can be found below.
